Recommendations for the preparation and the providing of the samples:

The samples should not be more than 10x10x5 mm3 (length x width x height). It is desirable that the samples were placed on a magnetic disk with the thickness of 0.5-1 mm and the diameter of 8-10 mm to provide secure fixation to the magnetic holder of the microscope. We recommend to glue samples with double-sided adhesive tape. It is convenient to use a Petri dish for the samples transportation. In this case, an edge of a sample can be stuck to the bottom of the dish by double-sided adhesive tape. It is also desirable to transport the samples mounted on the disk using the above method.

The surface of the sample under investigation must not contain handprints, grease and other contaminants, as they can damage the probe during the scanning process.

Each sample (as well as each Petri dish) should be numbered, signed, have a description and a unique name. It is recommended to provide the description not only in writing, but also in electronic form (please send the electronic version by e-mail

The description must specify:

  1. 1. Name and characteristics of each sample (such as name and structural formula of a chemical compound)
  2. 2. Method of sample preparation (conditions, solvents, etc.). In the case of usage of substrate material, it is recommended to describe its properties, and provide a clean substrate for the study. In the case of study of a series of samples it is desirable to highlight particularly the differences in preparation procedures and properties of different samples of the same series
  3. 3. Please indicate separately in the description: name of the laboratory, institution, contact person, contact details, grant number (if any), which is given to support the study.

As a substrate it is recommended to use freshly cleaved mica or HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) or other atomically smooth surfaces.

The samples should not be radioactive. They should not contain live viruses or otherwise be biohazardous.

The delivery of the samples is carried out by the client themselves or express mail (we recommend you to use the services of Major Express).
